Maine Coon Rescue hears stories of people being scammed when they are in search of a Maine Coon. Adopting a new cat can be a very exciting time. We wanted to share some tips on how to help you know what to look for when searching online.
- Be cautious if the person who is offering the cat only wants to communicate you with via text or email.
- Be cautious if the person who is offering the cat insists on shipping and no in-person pick-up is allowed. Scammers will usually insist on getting the cat to you quickly by shipping the cat.
- Be cautious if the person who is offering the cat insists you pay via unsecured methods. They may even ask you to send a gift card or money order. It is a good idea to always pay in ways that you can be guaranteed your money back.
- Be cautious if they ask you to send more money after the initial payment.
- Be cautious if the person who is offering the cat is very eager and pushing you to complete the transaction.
- Be cautious about people who are out of the country. If you are getting a cat from a breeder, especially be cautious without the country cats. Insist on meeting the cat in person.
- Be cautious about giving a deposit to a breeder if the kittens have not been born. It could be a scam.
- If the price seems low or too good to be true, be cautious. It could be a scam.
Things that you can do to help you feel more secure in your decision:
- Ask for multiple pictures or videos of the cat. You can even ask for a video chat. Real people (breeders or rescues) will not object to sending pictures or having a video chat.
- Do your research. Do a Google Search on the rescue or breeder to see what information you can find. Most rescues and breeders will have reviews, websites, and a social media presence.
- If getting a cat from a breeder, ask for photos and information on the parentage.
- Ask the breeder for vet information on the cat and the parents. Ask what kind of health screenings they perform.
- Do a reverse Google Search on the photo of the cat.
- If getting a cat from a breeder check to see if they are registered with CFA or TICA.
