Volunteer National humane groups estimate that as many as 70% of cats who go to a shelter do not make it out alive. In some shelters, animals are euthanized in only a few days -- when they actually need several weeks to find the right home. This includes kittens; shelters in economically disadvantaged parts of the country now are putting kittens to sleep within a few days when they become overrun with them during "kitten season." Rescue groups have become a vital resource to shelters. This transition from a shelter to a home makes animals more adoptable; shelters are stressful to most animals, so their true personality emerges once they are in a home. A foster stay can last from a couple of weeks to several months (especially with an older animal). We are asking Maine Coon owners to open their hearts and their homes and take in a foster or adopt a cat. Until we have many more fosters, Maine Coons are languishing while they are waiting to be taken from shelters and we are limited by contacting more shelters to find Maine Coons that may not be reported to us. With your help, we can save these precious creatures. If you are looking for a life-changing experience, we hope you will consider fostering one or more cats each year. We also need volunteers to be case managers to help find the right home for our cats. This can be done from the comfort of your home. If you like to fundraise, we need money for medical expenses such as vet care. (No amount is too small!) Our Fundraising team has a lot of fun. We also have a vibrant and growing Facebook presence and welcome sharing of our fosters and other cats who are in desperate situations. We also hope that you also will join our Facebook group, Maine Coon Rescue's Official Community. Here you will often see cats that are ready for adoption, cats that need to be rescued, fun stories about cats, and posts about our own cats. Fosters save lives millions of animals' lives every year.
